Red Rock Arts Festival Plein Air competition celebrates open air painting in breathtaking Moab environments. The colorful, week-long gathering of artists and art lovers features workshops, competitions, awards, public art sales, and culminates with a street festival celebration.

Dear Plein Air Artists, 

We are so excited to have you back for another year of painting in Moab! You may have noticed we changed the name of our festival, but fear not! Look forward to all the beloved Plein Air events, quick-draws, awards, and receptions as per usual. Red Rock Arts Festival is brought to you by The City of Moab, administered by the Moab Arts & Recreation Center staff. The name evolution and re-brand are the first steps toward a festival that will attract more locals and visitors to see your beautiful paintings. The festival's mission is to Celebrate Land-Inspired Art.  This change will allow us to broaden the offerings of our festival to attract a more diverse demographic. We are coordinating a robust schedule of opportunities; Land-inspired art workshops, lectures, performances, demonstrations, and art experientials exploring many mediums throughout the week. It is suggested that you bring ALL the supplies and frames that you will need. We do have one new art supply store in Moab, Imagination Station, however please be aware that their inventory is limited. The week will culminate with a brunch and awards presentation for Plein Air Artists with a street festival celebration to follow!

Registration

Join us at the MARC to check in/register starting at 9am on Saturday, October 7th, 2017. All participating artists must check-in and have their canvases stamped for the main competition. Welcome packets and schedules will be provided. Artists will be asked to accept the rules and guidelines upon check-in. Get here early so you have more time to paint!

Registration includes:

  • Main Competition - one or two category entry 
  • Entry to 3 Quick Draw Competitions 
  • Enter 2 Paintings in the Art Sale 

Registration Fees:

  • Before May 31st: $50 one category / $90 two categories
  • After May 31st: $70 one category / $110 two categories
  • Walk-in: $100 one category / $140 two categories
  • Student: $20

Registration & Canvas Stamping Schedule:
Saturday, October 7th from 9am - 5pm
Sunday, October 8th from 9am - 12pm
Monday, October 9th from 9am - 5pm
Tuesday, October 10th from 9am - 5pm
Wednesday, October 11th from 9am - 5pm

By registering, artists acknowledge and authorize the use of photos taken throughout this event, which may include artists and their art work, for promotional use online and in printed materials for future events. Further, artists acknowledge and agree to Red Rock arts Festival retaining 30% of the sale price of individual art sales generated during the event. 

It is suggested that you bring ALL the supplies and frames that you will need. We do have one new art supply store in Moab, Imagination Station, however please be aware that their inventory is limited.

Main Competition

This year we have two categories available for you to compete in:

  • Wet/Dry Media
  • Oil/Acrylic

Main Competition turn-in is at the MARC Friday, October 13th from 9am - 11am.

Main Competition awards and judges talk will take place Saturday, October 14th beginning at 10am at the MARC.

Plein air painting is a painting completed in the field, on location and “in the moment.” Please note there is NO limit to the number of surfaces you can have stamped. One painting may be submitted for the Main Competition per category, and it must have been completed 90% on site and within 50 surrounding miles of Moab, during the festival. Paintings must be FRAMED and ready for hanging upon entry. The maximum size of any painting is 24″ X 24” (not including the frame and matte). It is suggested that you bring ALL the supplies and frames that you will need. We do have one new art supply store in Moab, Imagination Station, however please be aware that their inventory is limited.

Quick Draws

Quick Draws are timed painting competitions. Registered artists are invited to complete an entire painting within a specific amount of time and allotted boundaries.  Paintings must be FRAMED and ready for hanging upon entry.Maximum size: 24″ X 24″ (not including the frame and matte). Quick draws are a fun way to improve your technique and paint along side other painters. To participate in our quick draw competitions you must be present to have your canvas stamped at the MARC before the Quick Draw begins. Schedule to be released at a later date. Cash prizes will be awarded to Quick Draw winners. All sales subject to a 30% commission.

Quick Draws will take place on:

  • Sunday, October 8th 
  • Wednesday, October 11th
  • Friday, October 13th

Art Sale

Art Sale Submissions will be accepted on Monday, October 9th between 9am and 11am.

The Moab Arts & Recreation Center (the MARC) is delighted to offer registered artists space to display up to 2 paintings for sale no larger then 24"x 24" (not including the frame and matte).. We prefer that the art works for sale feature regional Plein Air landscapes. All pieces in the Art Sale MUST be framed, and ready to hang on a purchasers wall.  We request that artists provide easels for display. The Art Sale is open to the public Monday Oct. 9th - Saturday Oct. 14th, and Red Rock Arts Festival retains a 30% commission on all sales. Our sales team will notify you when your pieces sell and we welcome you to replace sold paintings. Artists should plan to be present at the MARC no earlier then 9pm on Saturday, October 14th to collect remaining artwork.
